The Challenge
Azul de niño is an independent tragicomedy centred on an unexpected relationship between a wife and her husband's young lover after a sudden medical crisis forces them to share the same uncertainty.
Abismo Films commissioned the film poster with a brief that was clear about the desired visual tone but deliberately open about what the central image should depict. The references pointed towards the bold, graphic sensibility associated with Spanish cinema and Pedro Almodóvar's film posters, while the concept itself still needed to be defined.
The challenge was to condense the emotional tension of the story and its love triangle into a single image without illustrating the plot literally, while creating a poster with enough personality to stand on its own.
The Solution
The concept was developed through a collage-like illustration built from geometric, cut-out forms. A central figure is embraced by a second, deliberately ambiguous figure, creating an image that can be read through the two relationships surrounding the protagonist: his wife and his lover.
By merging those characters into one unresolved gesture, the composition suggests the emotional triangle at the centre of the film without revealing the story directly. The fragmented shapes introduce tension and intimacy, while the contrast between electric blue, black, off-white and vivid pink gives the poster a strong cinematic presence.
The result is a key visual that reflects the film's tragicomic tone and emotional ambiguity through a graphic language that feels expressive, contemporary and distinctly tied to the story.
